There’s a virtual revolution smouldering on the horizon for internet business owners. With Facebook’s recent announcement of Facebook Credits, the landscape for e-commerce retailers is about to change irrevocably, so, if you own an e-commerce internet business web site, you may want to sit up and pay attention.

You may be wondering a few things right now; “What are Facebook Credits?”, and “How do they work?” probably being foremost among them. You may also be thinking “This doesn’t apply to my situation”. All the more reason to find out more about something that is predicted to take the e-commerce sector by storm.

What Is Virtual Currency?

Virtual currency was set up to pay for virtual goods online like game credits or items needed to play the games, but is now an industry worth over a billion dollars and growing, so it’s something that you might want to start paying attention to.

Facebook Credits is set to take the virtual currency concept to a whole new level, being Facebook’s biggest initiative at the current time and one that’s bound to affect businesses on the web, including yours, as is the case with most of Facebook’s initiatives. After all, with half-a-billion eyes watching, how could it not have an effect? For online retail businesses, the only alternative currency that matters in future for online purchases may well be Facebook Credits.

Games Today, Everything Tomorrow

While Facebook Credits are only available for games right now, that will be changing very soon. Actually, it’s changing already, because major companies like Google, Amazon and Apple are keenly interested in developing a presence in the fledgling virtual currency industry, which means internet retailers especially should be keeping an eye on that space for future developments.

But, Facebook’s got a head start on those companies, having already established its own currency. Right now that currency can only be used for games and similar virtual purchases on Facebook, but the logical progression is that, through the Open Graph and Facebook Connect, physical goods will be available for purchase over the entire internet, presenting mind-boggling opportunities for e-tailers, from small, one-man operations to major worldwide brands.

Get Your Facebook Credits Here

Facebook Credits can be bought through the network itself and now at Target stores, since an agreement was entered into recently. More retailers are in negotiations and it shouldn’t be long before some of them, such as Best Buy, are offering Facebook Credits for sale. When buying credits online, they can be purchased using major credit cards, PayPal or even mobile phones, with 15 currencies currently accepted, including pounds, U.S. dollars, Euros, Danish Krone, etc.

While Facebook Credits and PayPal are partners today, that may change eventually as Facebook Credits seeks to change the way online payments are made and may end up competing with and perhaps threatening PayPal’s current online payment dominance.

Although Facebook Credits are still in their relative infancy, it’s a fair bet that it won’t be long before they’ll become part of the everyday online vernacular when it comes to making purchases online. So, if your internet business is involved in e-commerce, now would be the best time to learn all you can about this revolutionary new virtual currency and prepare your business for the next online tsunami.

If you’re unsure how this can impact your online business, consulting with a UK internet business coach would be a wise move so you can position your business to make maximum profits from this new method of handling online transactions. Otherwise, you may be left looking at your virtual balance sheet, and thinking, “What if….?”.

The virtual currency revolution is not a science fiction fantasy, it’s happening now, so don’t get left behind.

Are you advertising your internet business on Facebook? Does your company have any followers on Twitter? Are you taking advantage of the massive and constantly growing opportunity presented by social networking sites? Of course, having a presence for your business on the major social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook should be part of your search engine optimisation (SEO) strategy, but making the most of that presence is a different matter, and one that deserves close attention.

And here’s why: a recent report conducted by ROI Research Inc. concerning the impact of social media takes a close look at how advice they get from social networking sites influences consumers’ purchases; whether or not consumers post content on those same networks that’s specific to various industries, and how consumers post advice on products and companies.

Most Discussed Industries

According to the ROI Research Inc. report, the most discussed industries on the social networks were automotive, travel and entertainment, discussed by 61 percent, 60 percent  and 57 percent of users taking part in the report respectively. When you consider there are over half-a-billion users on Facebook alone, this represents a massive amount of discussion and recommendations and potential future customers, so, if you and your business aren’t part of the discussion, you’re missing out on a veritable avalanche of possible sales.

As far as recommendations on local retailers sought and offered by social network users, it seems that home furnishings comes out ahead, even beating out the automotive industry.

More Hot Topics

This is just the tip of the social media discussion and recommendation iceberg, and there’s plenty of talk going on about other topics, so let’s take a look at more of the leading contenders, according to this study.

  • 56 percent of Facebook users were fans of appliance retailers or brands, again a sizable vote for household items
  • 49 percent of users rely on social networking sites for advice on purchasing electronics
  • 49 percent of users discuss apparel and compare apparel prices on social networking sites
  • 49 percent of users are followers of automotive retailers or brands on Twitter
  • 38 percent of users take advantage of social networking sites when giving advice concerning home furnishing and financial services products or companies
  • 26 percent of users are inclined to purchase an automobile after reading a recommendation that had been posted by someone on a social networking site (higher than any other industry)
  • 23 percent of users are fans of or follow one or more travel companies on Facebook or Twitter

The results used to produce this report were compiled from 2009 to 2010 and show just how large an impact social media is having on the retail landscape. Marketers are now beginning to sit up and take notice with the news that businesses’ spending on Facebook advertising has increased 20 times year-over-year.

The results should also make it clear to you, as an internet business owner, that social media should no longer be ignored as far as your search engine optimisation (SEO) and the potential to increase your profits are concerned. For help with making the most of social media and its vast opportunities, consult a UK internet business consultant, who will analyze your business’s current situation and map out a social media strategy to get your business included in the purchasing discussions and recommendations being made on social networking sites.

When professional web developers in English-speaking countries create new web sites, just how much thought do they give to making the site adaptable to other languages? Not a great deal would be our best bet – at least, at the present time. But, as of May 2010, that has probably all changed – and pretty rapidly, we’d bet. That’s because the way the web works throughout the world changed as of that date, even though users living in countries using a Latin-based alphabet system, such as the UK, Germany, Canada, US, Spain, Australia or France, will not have noticed much difference.

The web-changing event was the fact that ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) introduced a system that allows full URLs with no Latin characters. This means that URLs can now be composed of entirely non-Latin scripts, such as Chinese, Hebrew, Arabic and Thai, with the country code included.

Going Global

This change has been described as one of the most significant since the internet began and one that has massive ramifications. But, you may be wondering “How does this affect me?”, and the answer lies in the fact that, until now, the web has been basically an English language platform, but, with this latest development, the web is set to take on a truly global look and feel and become a truer reflection of the global nature of the rapidly growing online population.

Since Asia accounts for 75 percent of the Earth’s total population, and 40 percent of the world’s total internet users, and China has about one third more online users than the U.S., it’s vital businesses start to think and act more globally than locally.

Web Design For The World

What then can web designers and professionals do to help make the internet a truly global entity? Even if a purely English site is being designed and built, there are certain things that can be done to ready a site for the linguistic and cultural requirements it will need to meet to be a genuine global community.

We all know that content is king, but sometimes web designers need to be reminded of that, since creating a site with all the glitz and glamour possible won’t keep visitors coming back time and again – it’s content that does that.

Here are some things that can be done to set a web site up for global expansion:

  • Unicode is used with the different writing systems of the world to ensure that text is represented consistently. It has a repository of more than 100,000 different characters and covers 90 different written languages or scripts.
  • If a designer wishes to set up a site that can be easily adapted for other languages, such as Chinese or Arabic, an excellent option is the use of UTF-8, which is a Unicode variable length character encoding that’s compatible with the majority of the common platforms and browsers. Also, PHP is great for handling strings, which is a necessity when dealing with non-Latin scripts.

Consider Content

The length of words varies greatly between languages, so this is a factor that must be borne in mind when a web site is being designed. Elements containing text should allow words to expand and flow as required, so using cascading style sheets (CSS) would be advisable as it allows design and content to remain separate through its table-free design. This is important since it means separate pages won’t need to be designed and built to accommodate different languages.

Keep It Simple

Another factor that needs to play a part in design for a truly worldwide web is the fact that, despite the flourishing of broadband throughout Europe and the U.S., many parts of the world can still only access the internet at much slower dial-up speeds.

Therefore, avoiding the use of Flash animation and other bandwidth-intensive graphics is imperative, otherwise many users around the world may be prevented from accessing your site. So, providing 2 versions of your site would be the solution – one HTML only, and the other with all the flash and pyrotechnics you like.

Consideration For Other Cultures

The culture of our native country is ingrained in us from our earliest years, and so we often don’t realise that what may be funny or amusing to us may actually be inappropriate or offensive to people from other cultures. Therefore, avoiding controversial topics or images, such as religion, nationality, etc., as part of your web site’s content would be advisable so as not to be offensive to cultures that may be more conservative.

Take the seemingly innocuous subject of using certain colours on your site. This may seem trivial but can have a startling impact in some cultures. For example, the colour red in Europe and North America indicates such things as danger or love, while in many Asian and Middle-Eastern cultures red denotes good luck or celebration.

There are many other examples of how colours in one culture can mean one thing, yet something completely different in others, and this is the type of thing that should be factored into web site design and associated colour schemes.

While the ramifications of the recent ICANN changes are still not entirely clear, the fact they will be far-reaching is in no doubt. Factoring in flexibility and adaptability into the architecture of any web site is a necessity going forward as you may want to extend the reach of your business to take advantage of the new global possibilities now available to you and your business.

The above points are just a few of the many that should be considered in order to create a web site that has the potential to be globally appealing. A UK internet business coach is versed in the impact of the ICANN changes and can give you the help you need in establishing your internet business as a player in the new global market going forward.

Applying The WIIFM Principle To Your Business Writing

When it comes to writing for your internet business, WIIFM, or “What’s In It For Me”, are probably the most important 5 letters there are. They may even be the most important as far as your overall business success is concerned. What people want to know when they visit your web site is what’s in it for them, and, if the message on your site isn’t clear as to what that is, but your competition’s is, you’ll be playing right into their hands, leaving you at a competitive disadvantage.

Get Them Asking Questions

While you need to let your visitors know what you can do for them by providing answers and solutions to their questions, you don’t need to supply all the answers; you should leave room for them to ask a few questions for themselves.

For example, if you meet someone who says he’s a carpenter, what exactly does that mean to you? You have a general idea of the type of work he does, but you don’t know specifically how what he does can help you. Now, had he said he’d installed kitchen cabinets, built garages, done fence work, etc., it may have triggered questions in your mind, such as “If he’s done that type of work, could he install a deck for me?”, which may lead to an entire conversation and perhaps you hiring him to build that deck you need. And all because he gave you some insight into what was in it for you by giving details on what he might do for you.

The same principle applies to writing for your web site or for your potential clients in general, i.e. the more questions you can ask your visitors, the more you’ll pique their interest, which is a very powerful, tried and tested copywriting  technique. But be sure your writing’s constructed in such a way as to not answer all your visitors’ questions. The more questions you can create in the minds of your potential clients, the more intrigued they’re likely to be, since, as a general rule, people don’t like having unanswered questions lingering around in their heads. This gives you access to your visitor’s mind, making him much more amenable to your web site’s message and the ultimate goal of attracting visitors to your site, such as purchasing products.

Your Marketing Pie

Even though you might like it to be, your internet business web site isn’t a printing press for money. If you have an e-commerce site, it certainly has the potential to be a 24/7 money-making sales and marketing machine, but, initially, the main objective of your web site, literature, advertising, press releases and social networking should be customer contact.

All your activities aimed at generating customer contact (social networking, web site, etc.) are what’s known collectively as your marketing pie. Each activity is interrelated with and supports the other and is an important ingredient in the making of the overall pie. Once the pie has done its job and contact has been made, the ball’s then in your court.

A Major Slice Of Your Marketing Pie

Your business’s web site is a major slice of your marketing pie, but does it pass muster? Let’s find out:

  • Does your site tell its readers what you can do for them at the top of every major page of your site?
  • Can your readers easily find your company’s phone numbers?
  • Do you provide GPS locatable navigation information if you’re located in a new office development?
  • Do you provide a page with directions? If so, is there a map that’s clickable to display an interactive map at Google or MapQauest? Are the directions accurate and well written?
  • Do you at least provide your location?
  • Is there a Press (or Media) Page with web accessible press releases? How about a way to contact your media professional? A brief description  of your company and its new and/or most important products? If not, how can anyone easily write a story or piece about you and your company?
  • Is there only a form on your “Contact Us” page? What about phone numbers, mailing and e-mail addresses, city, country, time zone? Do you provide specific contact information for customer service and management?

If you have no answer to some of those questions, you might want to refer your site to a UK internet business coach who can advise you on what need’s to be done to bring your web site up to speed, and can make sure your internet business site answers the question “What’s In It For Me” when your visitors arrive.

You’ve got your internet business up and running, and your web site looks good, so you just sit back and leave it to run like a finely-tuned engine and watch the profits roll in, right? Sadly, just the opposite! Your work has just begun, because, without completing regular maintenance tasks, you might as well have not created the web site in the first place, as it will eventually become virtually invisible to the search engines and, therefore, internet users.

There are certain tasks that need to be completed on a regular basis, so here is a list to help you with this ongoing project.

1. Adding Fresh Content

Updating your web site with fresh content will cause the search engine spiders to crawl your web site, and the more often you do so, the more often the spiders will visit your site. So, you should add content to your site once or twice a week. The content should be relevant and timely, perhaps news about your particular products or services or new innovations, and it should be of interest to your visitors.

2. Validate Links

When the search engine spiders crawl your site, they do so via links within your site connecting one page to the next and so on. Any invalid links will cause the spiders to stop crawling and can result in your web site being devalued in the eyes of the search engines. Also, any visitor coming across a dead link on your site will regard that as unprofessional and probably leave in frustration, most likely never to return. So, it’s important that you check the validity of your site’s internal links at least once a month, and, if any are invalid, you should either fix them, or, if they’re obsolete, remove them.

3. HTML Code Should Be Valid

If there are errors in your site’s HTML code, it can lead to serious damage to your web site rankings, so it’s imperative the code be checked prior to implementation. Common errors occur in the ordering of header tags, meta tags, etc., which can lead to major problems. Before publishing, verify your code using validation tools readily available online.

4. Monitor Web Site Rankings

Keeping an eye on your web site pages’ rankings will let you know which areas you need to pay attention to in case of a sudden drop in rankings. You may need to make adjustments to your search engine optimisation (SEO) strategy to restore your pages’ rankings by adding fresh content, fixing outdated links, etc., but without regular monitoring, your rankings may drop irreversibly.

5. Analyse Your Statistics

It’s important that you pay close attention to your web site’s statistics. You can glean valuable information from the statistical data, such as the number of visitors to a particular page, how they got there, where they exited, which keywords they used to find you, etc. All this data can help you to improve your web site’s performance by pinpointing areas that may need attention from a search engine optimisation (SEO) standpoint.

These are pretty basic maintenance tasks, but paying close attention to these will help improve the chances of success of your web site, provided you make sure to satisfy both the search engines and your human visitors in your search engine optimisation (SEO) efforts.

Don’t have the time or resources to devote to vital web site maintenance tasks? Don’t worry – you can always call on the expertise of a UK search engine optimisation (SEO) expert, who’ll take care of the mundane maintenance tasks while analysing your site for further refinements and improvements.
